Britney Is Free – The Battle of A 13 Year Conservatorship Comes To An End!

Just to recap if you did not already know, a conservatorship is when a guardian is appointed by a Judge to essentially have control over an individual’s personal and financial life. Earlier this year, Britney Spears’ conservatorship broke the internet when the pop star revealed the degree to which her father had legal control over her life, including her having to ask permission to go on vacation, control her cell phone, and more. As we, and the rest of the world, monitor the ongoing legal process, we’re bringing you the latest updates as well as what is meant for Britney and this conservatorship as a whole.

The Background

Britney’s conservator, Jamie Spears has been in complete control of Britney’s financial and medical affairs since 2008. The circumstances surrounding Britney’s conservatorship came to light in February 2021, when the documentary “Framing Britney Spears” aired, sparking the “#FreeBritney” movement and putting forth the argument that her conservator may not have her best interest at heart. The documentary highlighted Britney’s ongoing battle with the California courts to have her father removed from her conservatorship and be given the freedom to manage her own money.

Recent Updates

On June 23, 2021, Britney was finally allowed to give testimony in court. She claimed that she was made to work endlessly, explaining that she was to work seven days a week with no days off. Even more shocking, Britney testified she was forced to take prescription medications, was not allowed to get married or have another child, and was not allowed to have her IUD removed.

On July 1st, after hearing testimony, a Judge denied her request to have her father removed from her conservatorship. However, in mid-July, things seemed to take a turn in Britney’s favor when a Judge approved her request to hire her own attorney. Britney had previously been represented by a court-appointed attorney, who Britney claims did not allow Britney to speak about the circumstances of her conservatorship. Britney retained Mathew Rosengart as her private attorney.

Rosengart immediately got to work and filed a petition to remove Jamie Spears from Britney’s conservatorship in late July. Rosengart was able to move up the next court hearing over whether to have Jamie Spears removed from the conservatorship. The motion was ultimately denied.

In late August, Jamie Spears filed a petition to step down as Britney’s conservator. Rosengart responded, claiming that Jamie’s decision to step down is a ploy to further extort Britney’s estate since Jamie Spears petitioned to step down in exchange for $2 million in payments.

Brittney’s Free!

On September 7, 2021, Jamie Spears filed more court documents to end Britney’s conservatorship. According to Jamie Spears, he wants what is best for his daughter. The court will have to decide whether Britney will remain in a conservatorship.

UPDATE: November 12, 2021, a Los Angeles Judge has set Britney free at a hearing on Friday afternoon. The Judge went on to say that the conservatorship has long overseen the singer’s life and finances and is to be immediately terminated. After a long and hard fight, Britney’s plea to attain her right to freedom has finally been answered.
